Pakiri Beach (Ngā One Haea) is the long white-sand beach south of Te Arai, about an hour's drive from Mangawhai. It looks straight out at Hauturu-o-Toi/Little Barrier Island, with dunes and farmland behind it and very little built on it. Bring everything you need: there's no village at the beach. The holiday park is the only real base.

How do you get to Pakiri Beach?

From Mangawhai, head south past Te Arai towards Pakiri and follow the signs to Pakiri River Road, which ends at the beach and the estuary. It's about 47 km of mostly quiet rural road, so allow an hour. Coming from Matakana or Leigh, it's a short drive north. Pākiri Beach Holiday Park is at 261 Pakiri River Road.

Access to the beach at the end of Pakiri River Road crosses privately owned Māori land. The landowners have allowed public access for generations but have closed it at times, most recently with a rāhui in 2023 to protect the mussel beds (Te Ao Māori News). Respect any signs or rāhui you find, and don't take shellfish while one is in place.

Pākiri Regional Park, at the southern end, has no public vehicle access. The council says to park at 114 M Greenwood Road and walk in. The road is narrow and winding with a 40 km/h limit, and parking on the verge is limited. There are no toilets and no drinking water in the park, and no overnight camping. The nearest toilets are in Leigh.

Is Pakiri Beach safe for swimming?

  • Lifeguards: Safeswim lists patrols every day from 21 December 2026 to 10 January 2027, 10am to 6pm. Swim between the red and yellow flags and keep young children within arm's reach.
  • Rip currents are common along the beach, especially next to the Poutawa Stream.
  • The waves can dump on an outgoing tide, even when the surf looks good.
  • The wind can be strong and offshore, so check it before taking a kayak or paddleboard out.

Can you take dogs to Pakiri Beach?

No. Auckland Council prohibits dogs at all times on all park and farm land, beach and foreshore areas at Pākiri Regional Park, and on Pakiri Beach's Department of Conservation land. The beach is a breeding ground for shorebirds, including the tara iti. Leave the dog at home, or see our dogs guide for beaches near Mangawhai where dogs are allowed.

What to do there

Walk. The holiday park describes 14 km of white sand, and once you're past the estuary you'll mostly have it to yourself. The sheltered estuary by the holiday park is the calm-water option for small children. In good conditions there's surf and beach fishing. No drones in the regional park: they're a threat to the endangered birds. Combine it with Goat Island and Matakana for a long day south, or stop at Te Arai on the way home.
