Waipū Cove is the patrolled surf beach on Bream Bay, north of Langs Beach and about 15 km up the coast road from Mangawhai Heads. It has a surf club, a big campground, a café and the start of the coastal walkway to Langs. It gets busy in summer. Safeswim's advice is short: watch for the fixed rip current near the southern headland and always swim between the flags.
When is Waipū Cove patrolled?
Waipū Cove Surf Life Saving Club lifeguards patrol the beach. For 2026-27, Safeswim lists:
- Labour Weekend, Saturday 24 to Monday 26 October 2026: 11am to 4pm.
- Weekends from 28 November 2026: 11am to 5pm.
- Every day from Monday 14 December 2026 to Friday 12 February 2027: mostly 10am to 6pm on weekdays and 11am to 5pm at weekends and on holiday Mondays.
- Weekends from 13 February 2027 to Easter (Friday 26 to Monday 29 March 2027): 11am to 5pm until 21 February, then 11am to 4pm.
Outside those hours there are no lifeguards. Anywhere on this coast, if you're in trouble in the water, stay calm, float and raise an arm. On land, call 111 and ask for the police.
What to watch for in the water
- The fixed rip near the southern headland. Don't swim at that end.
- Other hazards Safeswim lists: large surf, rip currents along the beach, deep water, shallow water, submerged objects and a sudden drop in depth.
- Safeswim rates the water quality as consistently meeting national guidelines.
- Facilities: parking, toilets, showers, changing facilities, a playground and shops nearby.
Can you take a dog to Waipū Cove?
Not to the north of it. Whangārei District Council bans dogs at all times from Tip Road south to the northern end of the Waipū Cove campground, including the Waipū River mouth and estuary, to protect wildlife. Elsewhere, the district summer rule applies: from 20 December to 31 January, dogs are allowed on most beaches only before 9am or after 5pm. Dogs aren't allowed on the coastal walkway either.
The coastal walkway to Langs Beach
The Waipū Coastal Walkway starts at 903 Cove Road. The first section, Waipū Cove to Waterman Drive, is 2 km and about 1.5 hours through open pasture. The second, Waterman Drive to Langs Beach, is 900 m and about 45 minutes over rocky outcrops. Both are grade 3. If the tide is in, expect wet feet at the start. Our Langs Beach guide has the rest.
Where to eat and stay
- The Cove Cafe, Restaurant & Bar, 910 Cove Road, right at the beach.
- Camp Waipu Cove, the big beachfront campground.
- Waipu Cove Resort, 891 Cove Road.
- McLeod's Pizza Barn, in Waipū township on the way back.
- Waipu Horse Adventures, for horse treks near Waipū.
Make a day of it with the Waipū Caves in the morning and a swim at the Cove in the afternoon, or see every day trip from Mangawhai.
